Men's Bible Study: Grounded
Our meetings are Wednesday afternoons 1:30 - 3:00 pm.
We like to keep things relaxed.
We like to help each other grow.
We love God, His Word, and spending with Him as his sons.
Look forward to seeing you there!
14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, 16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
~ Ephesians 3v14-19 (ESV)

Covenant Theology
'What do you know about covenant theology?'
In my previous church we did a Bible overview for our Sunday evening gatherings. I would give a 10 minute talk and then we went into our Bible study groups. One year we did a Bible overview and so each ten minute talk would pick out something doctrinal or topical about the part of the Bible we would go onto study. A number of talks were on covenant theology. Partly, off the back of Rupert, my previous minister, asking me one afternoon, 'what do you know about covenant theology?' My answer was, 'there's the old and the new.' There was a huge black hole in my understanding of the Bible!
What a joy it was to dip into covenant theology.
It was amazing to discover how much covenant theology helps us to understand the overall story of the Bible, the love of God, of what Christ came to do, the condition of humanity in sin, and more.
I'd love us to do some work on convent theology, either at Grounded or through other teaching opportunities across the church. Yes because it's so worth doing but also because we highlighted that folks had not received much/any teaching on it before.
If you don't want to wait then I have some recommendations:
1) Book recommendation --
Raiding the Lost Ark: Recovering The Gospel Of The Covenant King by Jonty Rhodes.
Jonty is a really lovely guy. He has a church in Northern England in the IPC denomination. He's very clever and theologically solid but writes in a way that so accessible and easy to read. I found it a really helpful doorway into covenant theology.
2) Youtube talk --
So Trinity Church in Aberdeen recently did a couple of talks on covenant theology to train and equip some future elders. The minister is David Gibson, some of you may remember from Keswick in recent years on Ecclesiastes. He has a really good book on that! His brother is Jonathan Gibson, he works at Westminster Theological Seminary as associate professor. Jonathan gives the two lectures on covenant theology. Note the fact that people have come on a Saturday morning to attend this!! Amazing.
