Staff and Leadership

Dave McCarthy 2 edRector:
Rev David McCarthy

Dave studied at Edinburgh University, was ordained in 1988, serving at St Paul’s and St George’s, Edinburgh then at The Priory Church of St Mary of Mount Carmel in South Queensferry, before leading St Silas’, Glasgow for nineteen years. He joined St T’s in 2014, and has a passion to engage with the community and share God’s love. He has travelled and preached in Africa and North America, served on the boards of Glasgow City Mission and Scripture Union Scotland and currently serves on the Scottish advisory committee of Tearfund.

Dave has three adult children and is married to Dr Ali Cathcart, who comes from Northern Ireland and is a Senior Lecturer in Scottish History at the University of Strathclyde, specialising in the sixteenth century. They enjoy walking, travel, music, movies, castles and watching rugby (especially when Ireland play Scotland!).

Young Person's Pastoral Worker:
Claire Burns

We are delighted to have welcomed Claire to the staff team at St T's in 2015.
Claire has moved to Edinburgh from Ballyclare, Northern Ireland. She is a graduate of Belfast Bible College where she did a BA in Theology (2015). Claire has been worked alongside two Churches before her appointment in St T's.
She first started youth work in People's Church Newtownabbey then moved to St John's Church of Ireland when she began her placement at Bible College. This turned into a position as a member of voluntary staff doing youth work amongst other things.
Claire loves lots of chocolate and a good cup of coffee (don't we all?)

Worship Co-ordinator:
Gillian Brown

0131 316 4292

Gillian leads our music ministry along with a team of musicians, singers and worship leaders. We are a congregation who love to praise God in song and are blessed with many competent musicians. We make considerable use of modern worship songs but also include many traditional hymns in many services. Gillian has been involved in the worship ministry for most of her 15 years as a member of St Thomas' and is keen to hear from anyone who would like to participate in this area of church life.

Church Administrator:
Jane Ross

0131 316 4292

Jane has just started in January as Church Coordinator in the office at St Thomas'.  She deals with all enquiries and bookings for the Church premises while the office is open and all administration work needed by the Church.  She is a long term member of St T's.  Jane is married to Gordon and has two children and three grandchildren.
She loves being a Grandma, watching NFL football and hugs.  She can be contacted during office hours Tues to Fri 9am - 12.30pm by email, phone or pop in if you are passing.

St Thomas' Trustees and Vestry

The spiritual welfare of the congregation of St T’s is in the hands of the Rector whilst the whole temporal affairs of the church are committed to the management of the Vestry. There are 12 Vestry members, some elected by the congregation and some appointed by Vestry. Decisions are, in practice, usually taken by consensus. Unlike other Scottish Episcopal churches, we own our own buildings. Title is vested in 3 congregational Trustees and the Diocesan Trustees do not have any role to play. In view of their responsibility for our most significant property assets, the St Thomas’ Trustees attend at and participate in Vestry meetings. As mature Christians of longstanding, they contribute much wisdom and they have come to be regarded as having a special responsibility for the maintenance of our evangelical ethos. During a vacancy, the Trustees have a particular role to play, in conjunction with the Vestry, in seeking a new Rector and presenting that person to the Bishop for approval.
